Join the UT Health Science Center San Antonio’s Green Initiative by attending several events this week in recognition of Earth Week.

On Wednesday, April 20, a representative from NuRide, a carpool matching group, will be on campus from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Lecture Hall Commons. This program rewards students, faculty and staff for using “greener” forms of transportation, such as biking, public transportation and ride sharing.

The Go Green Fair will be held 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, also in the Lecture Hall Commons. The fair will feature representatives from organizations inside and outside the Health Science Center with ideas on how to recycle, reuse, save energy and reduce the carbon footprint at work and at home.

The Go Green Fair is set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Lecture Hall Commons. Groups participating include San Antonio Water System, CPS Energy, Alamo Area Council of Governments, Keep San Antonio Beautiful, city of San Antonio Recycling Education Division, Solar San Antonio, VIA Metropolitan Transit and the Bexar County Master Gardeners. Health Science Center departments participating in the event are the Office of Environmental Health & Safety, the landscaping division of Facilities Management, the UT Health Science Center Police Department, the Briscoe Library and the Health Science Center cafeteria.

“As a large employer and significant member of the San Antonio community, the UT Health Science Center can make an impact on our environment through our practices at work and at home. Please join our efforts to protect and preserve our earth for future generations,” said President William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP.

John Amos, a Health Science Center architect who leads the university’s Green Initiatives Committee, added, “This is a great opportunity to learn about solar panel systems, rebates for energy efficiency projects, recycling, drip irrigation, environmental health and toxicology, flexible fuel vehicles, xeriscape plans and battery recycling.”

He added, “There are so many small things that people can incorporate into their daily lives that can really add up to make a difference. We hope that everyone will stop by our booth at the Go Green Fair and take the Go Green Pledge.”

Additional ideas on how to “go green” and the Go Green Pledge are also located on the Go Green website, http://gogreen.uthscsa.edu. Or follow the Green Initiatives Committee activities on Facebook.
