SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 2, 2011) — Francisco González-Scarano, M.D., dean of the School of Medicine at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio, announced Dec. 2 the appointment of Robert Quinn, M.D., as chair of the school’s Department of Orthopaedics.
Dr. Quinn, currently professor and vice chair in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of New Mexico, was selected after an extensive national search. He will begin his new position April 2, and is expected to visit San Antonio regularly between now and then to begin implementing his vision for the department, said Dr. González, who is also vice president for medical affairs at the Health Science Center.
A native of Bryn Mawr, Pa., Dr. Quinn obtained his M.D. degree at Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He then completed an orthopaedic residency at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, followed by a fellowship in orthopaedic oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School.
Physician and researcherAn internationally renowned musculoskeletal tumor specialist, he is a member of several multidisciplinary research groups, including the Children’s Oncology Group, Southwest Oncology Group, Radiation Oncology Group, American College of Surgeons Oncology Group and International Ewing’s Sarcoma Research Forum.
Dr. Quinn is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). He is the author of numerous publications, including both editions of the AAOS
Orthopaedic Knowledge Update: Musculoskeletal Tumors.
Dr. Quinn has served on a number of national committees, including:
- Chair of the Fellowship Committee of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society;
- Member of the Education Committee, Musculoskeletal Tumor Society;
- Member of the AAOS Evidence-Based Practice Committee;
- Member of the AAOS Musculoskeletal Tumors and Diseases Evaluation Committee; and
- Member of the Board of Specialty Societies Fellowship Match Oversight Committee.
He also is a consultant reviewer for the
Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and for
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research.
Wilderness medicine specialistIn addition to orthopaedic surgery, Dr. Quinn is actively involved in the specialty of wilderness medicine. He is a fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine, a member of the board of directors of the Wilderness Medical Society, a board member of AdventureMed, which offers the Advanced Wilderness Life Support course with the University of Utah, a member of the New Mexico DMAT team (Disaster Medical Assistance Team), and a consultant reviewer for
Wilderness and Environmental Medicine.
He will be a physician wtih UT Medicine San Antonio, the clinical practice of the School of Medicine.
Dr. Quinn will be joined by his wife Stephanie, daughter Taryn, and sons Hunter and Devin.
