Five UT Health Science Center San Antonio faculty members were recently inducted into the Academy of Master Teachers. The academy is the Health Science Center’s professional society organized to demonstrate ongoing recognition of the commitment to teaching and learning excellence. The five honorees were among those recognized earlier this year as Presidential Teaching Excellence Award winners.

Janet F. Williams, M.D., FAAP, president of the Academy of Master Teachers, presided over the induction ceremony held May 10. “We are so proud to recognize the accomplishments of these distinguished faculty members. They represent the heart of teaching and teach from the heart,” said Williams, who is a Distinguished Teaching Professor, associate dean for faculty and diversity, and professor of pediatrics in the School of Medicine. The new academy members include:

• Constance L. Fry, M.D., chief of ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery and ophthalmic oncology, director of the residency program and associate professor in the Department of Ophthalmology in the School of Medicine;
  
  
• Margit B. Gerardi, Ph.D., RN, WHNP, assistant professor in the School of Nursing’s Department of Family and Community Health Systems;
  
  
• Kathleen A. Reeves, M.S.N., RN, CNS, CMSRN, CNE, clinical associate professor in the Department of Health Restoration & Care Systems Management of the School of Nursing;
  
  
• Nhung Tran, M.D., FAAP, assistant professor and section head of developmental-behavioral pediatrics in the Department of Pediatrics, part of the School of Medicine; and
  
  
• Blane Trautwein, Ed.D., CED, assistant professor and program director of the Deaf Education and Hearing Science Program in the School of Medicine’s Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.

Following the reception, two interactive workshops were presented by faculty members from Loma Linda University. Gail Rice, Ed.D., professor of allied health studies, presented “Introduction to Team-Based Learning” and Kerby Oberg, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of pathology and human anatomy, spoke on “Solving TBL Practical Problems.”
