Rick Sponsel, M.D., professor of ophthalmology, accepted a Medal of Honor on behalf of his surgical team at the 102nd annual conference of the Egyptian Ophthalmological Society March 12 in Cairo, Egypt. Dr. Sponsel and his surgical team, including residents Gianmarco Paris, M.D., and Fernando Trujillo, M.D., were recognized for their presentation at the second annual International Congress of Glaucoma Surgery (ICGS) in Luxor, Egypt. The team won Best Paper at the meeting of the congress for their work on the surgical treatment of ocular hypotony using ultrabiomicroscopy. They worked in collaboration with surgeons at Brooke Army Medical Center. The ICGS is sponsored by 19 leading international ophthalmic societies.
