Craig Witz, M.D., associate professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology, has received a Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation 2004 Piper Professorship.
Fifteen awards of $5,000 each are made annually to professors for superior teaching at the college level. Selection is made on the basis of nominations submitted by each college or university in the State of Texas. Begun in 1958, with eight awards, the roster of Piper Professors includes outstanding professors from public and private two- and four-year colleges and universities.
Dr. Witz was named a Best Doctor in the 2004 Best Doctors® in America database and received a Health Science Center Presidential Teaching Excellence Award in 1999. Several graduating medical school classes have also presented Dr. Witz with teaching excellence awards. Dr. Witz is actively involved with the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), having served as chairman of Abstract Committees and as a moderator at national meetings. He also serves as a representative to the Continuing Medical Education Committee of the ASRM. Dr. Witz is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a member of the Texas Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, and the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.
Past Health Science Center honorees are: Drs. Carlos Pestana, 1972; John Preece, 1978; Robert Huff, 1980; Terry Mikiten, 1985; Joyce Schwartz, 1992; Linda Johnson, 1995; Nan Clare, 1998; D. Michael Foulds, 2000; and Mary K. Vaughan, 2002.
