F. David Schneider, M.D., associate professor in the department of family and community medicine, was the Physician of the Day at the Texas State Capitol in Austin on May 10.

The Physician of the Day program provides the capitol with a doctor who is on-call to treat sick capitol employees for one full day. Physicians volunteer their services. Dr. Schneider was also introduced on the Senate floor by Sen. Leticia Van de Putte after the Senate convened at 1 p.m.

For the past 32 years, the Texas Academy of Family Physicians (TAFP) has sponsored the program. Members donate their time to the program.

Dr. Schneider, president of the TAFP, graduated from Boston University’s School of Medicine and the Duke/Fayetteville Family Medicine Residency Program in North Carolina. He completed a fellowship in academic family medicine and a master of science in public health at the University of Missouri. He serves as chairman of the education committee on the American Medical Association’s Advisory Council on Violence and Abuse and is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians’ Commission on Public Health. Dr. Schneider also recently became the founding president of a newly created national academic society for research and education on violence and abuse.
