The Health Science Center welcomes Jean-Louis Caron, M.D., to campus. Dr. Caron, who began his post May 3, is a professor of neurosurgery in the Center for Neurosurgical Sciences. Prior to arriving at the Health Science Center, he was an associate professor in the department of surgery at the Université de Montréal and the Centre Hospitalier of the Université de Montréal (CHUM).
He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeon of Canada, a member of the Canadian Council of Neurological Sciences and a member of the Canadian Neurosurgical Society. He is also a member of the Association Médicale du Québec, the Canadian Medical Association, the Association des Neurochirurgiens de la Province de Québec, the Fédération des Médecins Spécialistes du Québec, the American Heart and Stroke Association and the Canadian Stroke Consortium. In 2003, he served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Neurosurgical Society.
Dr. Caron has also served as an associate professor of neurosurgery at McGill University and was an attending neurosurgeon at The Montreal General Hospital.
Dr. Caron is an expert in cerebrovascular diseases, radiosurgery, spinal instrumentation and the treatment of pain. His research interests include innovative therapies for neurovascular diseases and improving outcomes following traumatic brain injuries. He also has an interest in stereotactic radiosurgery and spinal oncology.
Dr. Caron earned his bachelor of science degree in biochemistry in 1975 and his doctorate in medicine, magna cum laude, in 1979, both from the University of Ottawa, Ontario. He trained in neurosurgery at the Montreal Neurological Institute of McGill University and studied neurovascular surgery under the supervision of Dr. Charles Drake at the University of Western Ontario.
