2011 Salute to our Nation’s Heroes

WHO:
The Department of Veterans Affairs – VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System, the UT Health Science Center San Antonio – Regional Academic Health Center, and the city of Harlingen proudly present this patriotic program honoring the sacrifices of all who served and fought for our freedom.

AGENDA:
Presentation of colors by Harlingen Police Department color guard; singing of The Star-Spangled Banner and recitation of Pledge of Allegiance; remarks by Harlingen Mayor Chris Boswell; remarks by VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System Acting Director Danna Malone; welcome and close by emcee Leonel Vela, M.D., regional dean, School of Medicine, UT Health Science Center; special entertainment

SINGERS:
Fifth-graders from Freddy Gonzalez Elementary School, under the leadership of Principal Arnoldo Benavides, will perform a selection of patriotic songs including God Bless America. The elementary school in Edinburg is named for Alfredo “Freddy” Gonzalez (1946–1968), a U.S. Marine Corps sergeant who posthumously received the Congressional Medal of Honor for service in the Battle of Huế during the Vietnam War.

NOTES:
This event is free and open to the public. The city of Harlingen is providing 150 chairs. Punch and cake will be served after the program.
