Department of Molecular Medicine
Welcome!

The University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHSCSA) Institute of Biotechnology (IBT) was established in 1991 in the Texas Research Park located in the foothills of the beautiful hill country of southern Texas just outside metropolitan San Antonio. In 1994, with the goal of establishing itself as a center of biomedical research excellence, the IBT acquired approval from the Texas Higher Education Board to establish the Graduate Program in Molecular Medicine within the UTHSCSA Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. This forward-looking academic program was designed to train students at the interface of basic and clinical sciences. It’s inception marked the first such program in the State of Texas, and was rooted in the firm belief that rigorous training of scientists in the genetic and biochemical basis of human disease would provide an effective means to translate rapid advances in basic research into practical health benefits for the 21st century public. Accordingly, the Program in Molecular Medicine offers a research-oriented, interdisciplinary program of study in the following areas as they relate to the fundamental understanding of cancer biology and its prevention: signal transduction and control of gene expression, cell cycle and checkpoint controls, DNA damage repair and mechanisms of genomic instability, regulated protein degradation, and animal models of aging and cancer. In 1996, the Department of Molecular Medicine was established, thereby providing an instrument through which the Graduate Program in Molecular Medicine could be administered, and Institute of Biotechnology faculty appointed. Since its inception a decade ago, the highly successful Program in Molecular Medicine has awarded 17 Masters and 48 Doctoral degrees.

To date, research faculty within the Institute of Biotechnology have been awarded a total of $38 million dollars of funding from federal agencies including the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the Department of Defense. Importantly, the Department of Molecular Medicine/Institute of Biotechnology has been a major contributor to the advancement of science as demonstrated by its outstanding publication record. Over 200 research articles have been published from this Institute since its inception, including numerous articles in high profile journals such as Nature, Cell, and Science.

Today, the faculty research interests at the Institute of Biotechnology remain focused on understanding the molecular basis of human disease. These interests encompass studies on cancer biology, animal models of human disease, DNA repair, hormone receptor signaling, controlled proteolysis, cell cycle and checkpoint control, signal transduction, and transcriptional regulation. Our faculty are dedicated to advancing the research excellence of the Department of Molecular Medicine/Institute of Biotechnology and to developing molecular tools for the treatment and prevention of human diseases.
