Brief Summary/Overview |
IR Priorities |
The CIO, with the help of the CIO's Advisory Committee and the UTHSCSA’s Executive Committee, sets broad IR priorities for information resource activities. The CIO (Agency designated IRM) is a member of Executive Committee ensuring that IR policies and priorities are congruent with the institution's missions and overall strategic planning. The Directors of all IR departments have advisory committees ensuring constituents' input into department level strategic and operational priorities. |
IR Planning Methodology |
UTHSCSA’s IR Strategic Plan is developed and implemented in the following steps: 1. The CIO, with appropriate input, sets the overall IR goals in conjunction with the HSC's Strategic Plan. 2. The Manager of Strategy and Compliance, with input from IR department Directors, reviews the current plan to determine the status of documented objectives and strategies and evaluates any needed changes to meet the CIO's goals. 3. Inputs from the CIO and department Directors are incorporated into the first Plan draft. 4. The CIO and all IR Directors review the draft ASP for IR. Final input and edits are sent to the Manager of Strategy and Compliance to be incorporated into the final Strategic Plan. 5. The CIO's advisory committee and the UTHSCSA’s Executive Committee review the final draft prior to submission. |
Quality Assurance Practices |
Currently, all major administrative software development relates to the HSC's PeopleSoft implementation project. The UTHSCSA developed “Project Management Guide” and “Sustainment Plan” are the controlling project management guidelines for system development and system maintenance respectively. Quality Assurance requirements are addressed in these documents and all key DIR requirements (Risk, Planning, Benefits and Costs, Effectiveness and efficiency, Monitoring, and Post Project review) are addressed within these documents. |

Brief Summary/Overview |
Personal Computer Replacement Schedule |
Because of UTHSCSA’s decentralized organizational structure and the diverse funding mechanisms for IT procurement, the HSC is not able to implement a mandatory PC replacement schedule. However, the IT organization has entered into a contractual vendor relationship to provide “standardized” desktops. Administrative departments are required to purchase from the “standard” desktop options and Academic departments are strongly encouraged to do the same. Additionally, operational procedures for centralized PC maintenance and support are in place to help control the total cost of ownership of UTHSCSA’s personal computers. A list of supported operating system and application software is maintained and updated regularly. Given the nature of a University environment, these two strategies have been fairly successful in ensuring an efficient workstation infrastructure is maintained. |
Procurement |
UTHSCSA employs Purchasing Industry best practices to ensure that IT procurements are effective, while maintaining a control on cost. Leasing options are evaluated on major IT procurements, with the procurement contracts for PeopleSoft Software and the Standardized Desktop being two recent examples of the process. |
Disaster Recovery / Business Continuity Planning |
UTHSCSA’s Disaster Recovery Plan details the methodology to be used in prioritizing tasks in the event of a disaster. Basically, priorities will be set depending on the timing of the business cycle and with direct involvement of executive management at UTHSCSA. HSC has no contractual or interagency agreement to perform disaster recovery services related to data center operations. A separate and remote "hot" site is maintained on campus, which also functions as the software development environment. |
Data Center Operations |
UTHSCSA has no plans for migration of data center operations and/or disaster recovery services to the WTDROC. |
Standards |
UTHSCSA makes every effort to maintain compliance with DIR’s Information Resources Standards and Guidelines. |
