About the UTHSCSA
The University
of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio , located in the northern
suburbs of the city of San Antonio, is one of the 15 components in The University of Texas System. The UTHSCSA, a health science center in the truest sense, is composed of five interactive schools: The Graduate
School of Biomedical Sciences, Dental School,
Medical School, School of Allied Health Sciences, and the School of Nursing.
The Health Science Center environment allows a unique opportunity for the
more than 2,500 students enrolled in more than 35 degree programs to experience
a high quality combination of clinical and basic sciences. Away from
the main campus, research is conducted at the university's Institute of
Biotechnology (IBT), and the South Texas Centers for Biology in Medicine, both located in San Antonio's Texas Research Park.
The Health Science Center is relatively young, having been founded in 1968, but it already
has a rich history and has established itself as a premier educational and research institution. Research dollars to the Health Science Center continue to grow, with approximately $106 million currently supporting approximately 1100 projects. Further, the university's endowment has grown from about $9 million in 1989 to more than $200 million as of the end of 2002.
To complement the activities at the Health Science Center, San Antonio has several undergraduate
and graduate institutions of higher education. The University
of Texas at San Antonio , not to be confused with The University
of Texas Health Science Center described above, is an undergraduate arm
of The University of Texas System
(whose main campus is found 70 miles north of San Antonio, in Austin). Other fine
academic institutions in San Antonio include Trinity
University, St. Mary's University,
and the University of the Incarnate Word.
The Southwest Foundation for Biomedical
Research and the Southwest Research
Institute, although not directly affiliated with the university
system, provide many benefits in the form of additional sources of research
expertise and off-campus, cross-appointed faculty.
So, the vision of our community leaders, combined with the energy, talent, and dedication
of students, faculty and staff, make the UTHSCSA a major force in the biosciences
today. With the ongoing support from state and federal funds, as well as
regional and global partnerships with groups such as the World Health Organization,
the UTHSCSA is likely to continue making significant contributions to biomedical
research, and science and clinical training, well into the future.
