The expression of disease following infection with the intracellular protozoan Leishmania is determined in part by the host cellular immune response. The immunopathogenesis of cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis is being studied in experimental animal models. Characterization of the host mechanisms associated with protective immunity, especially T cell and macrophage effector function, is a major goal. Several recombinant vaccine candidates are being studied in an experimental vaccination model. A protective multicomponent DNA vaccine is being tested for its ability to reduce transmission of Leishmania chagasi in an endemic area in South America.
