Research interests:

Innate Immune Regulation During Respiratory RNA Virus Infection
For this project we are studying how the host responds to respiratory virus infection by producing immune factors which contribute to disease pathogenesis and virus evasion. COSTAR supported research has led to identification of Kruppel-like factor 6 (KLF6) as a transcription factor which can bind to the promoters of iNOS and TGF-β genes during respiratory RNA virus infection. Trans-activation of iNOS gene during Influenza A virus infection results in iNOS enzyme production, leading to NO release and increased apoptosis. Trans-activation of TGF-β gene during respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection leads to increased TGF-β secretion, and increased RSV replication in human lung epithelial cells.
