December 2002 Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., Health Science Center president, has accepted a two-year term on the Secretary’s Council on Public Health Preparedness, a new advisory panel of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson extended the invitation. In establishing the Council, Secretary Thompson determined that a public health emergency exists as a consequence of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The council advises the secretary on appropriate actions to respond to this type of public health emergency and similar emergency situations.
