December 2002 Bettie Sue Siler Masters, Ph.D., the Robert A. Welch Foundation Professor in Chemistry, recently assumed duties as president of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). ASBMB Today, the monthly publication of the Society, pictured Dr. Masters on the cover. Her presidential message, titled "New Beginnings," addresses the benefits to scientists of joining a professional society. In addition to her work with the ASBMB, Dr. Masters is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She was inducted into the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 1996. She has served on the Federation for American Societies of Experimental Biology Board of Directors since 1998 and is serving on the Advisory Committee to the director of the National Institutes of Health until 2004. She is appointed in the department of biochemistry at the Health Science Center.
