August 2003 John F. Alderete, Ph.D., will serve as co-chair of the Health Sciences Advisory Council of the Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities (HACU). Dr. Alderete is a professor in the department of microbiology and immunology. He formerly directed the department’s training programs in microbial and viral pathogenesis. "The Council and HACU will be well served by your expertise and exceptional background," Antonio R. Flores, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of HACU, wrote in a letter to Dr. Alderete. Dr. Alderete, a longtime advocate for the entry of young Hispanics into graduate programs in the health sciences, said the formation of the HACU Health Sciences Advisory Council was a "historical accomplishment."
