John F. Alderete, Ph.D.
Professor of microbiology
Dr. Alderete has received the William A. Hinton Research Training Award from the American Society of Microbiology in recognition of his commitment to helping minority students and professionals achieve their goals. Dr. Alderete has mentored graduate and undergraduate students and postdoctoral fellows and has encouraged many middle and high school students to pursue careers in science.
The award is given in memory of William A. Hinton, who was a physician-research scientist and one of the first blacks to join the society.

Martha Medrano, M.D., M.P.H.
Assistant dean for continuing medical education, director of the School of Medicine’s Hispanic Center of Excellence, and associate professor of psychiatry
Dr. Medrano received the 2004 Medical School Distinguished Alumnus Award. Dr. Medrano, who graduated from the Health Science Center’s School of Medicine in 1981, received her award at the school’s commencement May 22. One outstanding alumnus is selected by the school’s alumni association each year. Candidates are chosen based on their impact on, and accomplishments in, the profession of medicine, and the extent to which they have impacted their community through leadership and activities. Nominees are also judged on their efforts to promote the school and its students, and their actions or involvement in reflecting the mission of the alumni association and the School of Medicine.

Craig Witz, M.D.
Associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology
Dr. Witz has received a Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation 2004 Piper Professorship. Fifteen awards of $5,000 each are presented annually to professors for superior teaching at the college level. Selection is made on the basis of nominations submitted by each college or university in the state of Texas. Established in 1958, with eight awards, the roster of Piper Professors includes outstanding professors from public and private two- and four-year colleges and universities throughout Texas.
