The 2005 Presidential Awards
Honoring excellence at the Health Science Center

Each year, the Health Science Center recognizes, with the Presidential Awards, 16 faculty and staff members who are shining examples of excellence in their offices, labs, clinics and classrooms. Their dedication and leadership provide the groundwork for future generations of scientists and health care providers. Their hard work leads to improvements in the health care of the people of our region.

Hanna E. Abboud, M.D., the Jay H. Stein Professor in the department of medicine and chief of the division of nephrology, received this year’s highest honor – the 2005 Presidential Distinguished Scholar Award. Dr. Abboud is one of the world’s leaders in the research and treatment of kidney disease.

Under Dr. Abboud’s leadership, the Health Science Center’s clinical nephrology program has been ranked among the top 50 programs in the country since 2000, according to U.S. News & World Report. The dialysis and renal transplant programs have doubled in size.

Dr. Abboud also is a recipient of the prestigious MERIT (Method to Extend Research in Time) Award from the National Institutes of Health, which provides up to 10 years of grant support and ensures long-term, stable funding for researchers with track records of superior competence and excellent productivity. Among all scientists funded by the NIH, less than 1 in 100 are MERIT Award recipients.
