July 2005 by Will Sansom The Barshop name is a great name in San Antonio business and philanthropy, and now it graces the premier longevity and aging studies institute in the country. The Barshop Institute has joined the Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins and other hallowed names in the biosciences. Understanding aging and making our later years healthier and more productive is a lofty undertaking, but it has lofty boosters in Sam and Ann Barshop. The Barshops are lifelong supporters of higher education. During his terms on The University of Texas System Board of Regents, Mr. Barshop was the strongest proponent of keeping the System’s facilities in good running order. His business career is legendary. After receiving his degree from the U.T. Austin College of Business Administration (now the McCombs School of Business) and serving in the U.S. Air Force, he founded La Quinta Inns Inc. and is the retired chairman of the board, president and CEO. He currently is chairman of the board of Barshop & Oles Co. Mr. Barshop’s partner in life is his beautiful wife, Ann. She has been the helpmate at his side throughout his distinguished career. The Sam and Ann Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies will carry their names for generations to come and remind us of their generosity.
