January 2006 World-renowned physician-scientist Sunil K. Ahuja, M.D., was honored as the Health Science Center’s 2005 President’s Council Chair for Excellence in Medical Research. Dr. Ahuja is professor of medicine (infectious diseases), microbiology and immunology and director of the Veterans Administration Center for HIV/AIDS Research. Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D, Health Science Center president, presented the award in November during the annual President’s Council luncheon, which emphasized the importance of endowments and honored the donors who make them possible. "Dr. Ahuja is changing the way the scientific world looks at infectious diseases, particularly HIV and the AIDS epidemic," Dr. Cigarroa said. "Because of the generosity of the President’s Council and our wonderful donors, I am proud to award Dr. Ahuja with this $500,000 endowed chair. He is one of the Health Science Center’s most distinguished physicians."
