August 2007 The 2007 Presidential Awards were presented to faculty and staff members who exemplify exceptional dedication and leadership in their fields and provide good examples for others. "From outstanding faculty to dedicated staff to bright students, we are blessed with some of the nation’s finest," President Cigarroa said. The Presidential Distinguished Scholar Award was presented to Steven M. Haffner, M.D. Dr. Haffner is a professor in the department of medicine’s division of clinical epidemiology. The world-renowned epidemiologist has designed and led major clinical trials breaking new ground in diabetes and cardiovascular disease. One of the most cited researchers in the world, Dr. Haffner helped spearhead the Diabetes Prevention Program, through which researchers discovered that moderate weight loss with diet and exercise lowered the incidence of diabetes among participants by 58 percent. Dr. Cigarroa was proud to announce the other honorees in the following categories: Presidential Junior Research Scholar Presidential Teaching Excellence Award Presidential Clinical Excellence Award Employee Excellence in Service Award Dr. and Mrs. Malcolm D. Orr were presented the Special Presidential Award for their tireless efforts in establishing and nurturing the HSC International Alliance, an organization formed to welcome students, employees and their families to campus.
