August 2007 Leaders from the Health Science Center announced three years of funding – at a total cost of $1.2 million – for professors to mentor younger faculty from The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA). Michael A. Escamilla, M.D., the Mary Weir Professor in the Health Science Center’s department of psychiatry, leads the program. The research, which focuses on the genetics of complex diseases such as diabetes and schizophrenia, is under way at the HSC’s Regional Academic Health Center Medical Research Division adjacent to UTPA in Edinburg.
