A program called the SAFE Family Project is helping
health care providers to identify and treat victims of domestic violence.
The principal investigator on two new SAFE Family
Project grants is Margaret Brackley, Ph.D., R.N.,
associate professor in the Department of Family Nursing Care. With
$25,000 from the San Antonio Area Foundation and $7,300 from the Health
Education Training Centers Alliance of Texas (HETCAT), the program is now
able to provide patient education materials, resources, evaluation tools
and training for staff of the University Health System.
Joe Thornton, M.D., assistant professor of psychiatry,
established the SAFE Family Project in 1998. The program includes a SAFE
Family Web site sponsored by the University Health System and the San
Antonio Police Department.
The Web site provides information on domestic
violence, phone numbers of shelters and links to other helpful sites. The
site has been operational since March and is being translated into
Spanish.
