Endowed chair established for Dr. Folbre

The Thomas Walthall Folbre, MD, Endowed Chair in Otolaryngology has been established at the Health Science Center.

Mrs. Pauline McShane Folbre of San Antonio endowed the chair to honor the memory of Dr. Folbre, an otolaryngologist, who died in May 1993.

"Dr. Folbre was instrumental in supporting the otolaryngology program at the Health Science Center since its beginnings more than 20 years ago," said Robert A. Dobie, MD, professor and chairman of otolaryngology/head and neck surgery. "We are pleased to be able to honor his memory through this endowment."

Dr. Folbre practiced in San Antonio from 1938 until his retirement in 1981, with the exception of his service in the Medical Corps during World War II. Prior to practicing in San Antonio, Dr. Folbre served an internship in Philadelphia and a residency in New York.

The endowment was created in December 1993 by The University of Texas System Board of Regents.

A graduate of The University of Texas at Austin and The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Dr. Folbre was a diplomate of the American Academy of Otolaryngology. He also was active in Bexar County, Texas and American medical societies, in addition to numerous other professional organizations.

The endowment will provide funds to advance research and education related to diseases of the ear, nose and throat.

"We are deeply thankful to Mrs. Folbre for her generosity which makes this endowment possible," said John P. Howe III, MD, Health Science Center president. "Dr. Folbre was a distinguished physician and we are grateful that his family has established this lasting memorial in his honor."
