- In 1995 the Texas Legislature began a program
called the South Texas/Border Region Health Education
Initiative. The program was created to expand and
improve educational opportunities in South Texas,
and to date it has received $31.3 million in funding. With 21 new programs for health professionals well under way, the program was approved in 1997 for another two years and will be up for approval again in 1999.
- Students participating in the Dental School's
undergraduate research program have received 67
nationally competitive awards since 1985, more than
any other dental school in the nation.
- A graduate course in the "Physics of Nuclear
Medicine" will become the first-ever
health-related graduate course to be offered
jointly by the Health Science Center and the
Mexico City campus of UNAM, the Universidad
Nacional Autonoma de Mexico.
