Medical School alumni have created the Carlos Pestana, MD, PhD, Medical Alumni Association Scholarship Fund to honor the professor of surgery, who stepped down as associate dean for academic affairs in the Medical School in December.

The fund will be used for financial aid to medical students. The honor also includes the naming of the lecture hall used primarily by second-year medical students as the Carlos Pestana, MD, PhD, Lecture Hall.

Dr. Pestana joined the Health Science Center in 1968 when the doors to the Medical School first opened and has taught every Medical School class during the school’s three decades.

"Dr. Pestana represents the crucial link between our graduates and our Medical School," said James J. Young, PhD, Medical School dean. "Every student has been touched by his teaching excellence."

Dr. Pestana recently received the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award during the Association of American Medical Colleges annual meeting.
