Summer 1997 Mission

Diehl named Hollan Professor

The O. Roger Hollan, MD, Professorship in Internal Medicine has been established at the Health Science Center. Andrew K. Diehl, MD, professor of medicine and assistant dean for primary care in the Medical School, is the first Hollan Professor.

The professorship was created by family, former patients and friends to honor the renowned San Antonio physician's more than 40 years in practice. The new endowment was announced during a reception in February during which donors who contributed to the $100,000 professorship gathered to recognize Dr. Hollan for his dedicated service to his patients and his profession.

"Dr. Hollan has been widely recognized and appreciated for his commitment to excellence in caring for his patients and teaching medical students, interns and residents," said John P. Howe III, MD, president. "His quietly effective leadership in the medical community and his gentlemanly but firm adherence to principle in all his undertakings and relationships are exemplary. We are very pleased to join in honoring Dr. Hollan in a way that will help inspire future health care professionals in San Antonio and South Texas."

Upon receiving the honor, Dr. Diehl said, "It is a great honor to be named to the Hollan Professorship. Dr. Hollan has served for many years on our clinical faculty and is an inspiration to his students. The Hollan endowment will allow us to expand our educational programs in general internal medicine."

Dr. Diehl earned his MD degree from Harvard Medical School and a Master of Science from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the Health Science Center and has been on the faculty since 1977.
