Arlan G. Richardson, PhD, professor of physiology and medicine at the Health Science Center, has been named the initial holder of the Methodist Hospital Foundation Chair in Aging Studies and Research.
Dr. Richardson is director of the Health Science Center's Aging Research & Education Center and Nathan Shock Center. He is also a Career Scientist at Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital in San Antonio.
"Dr. Richardson already has a distinguished career in research and teaching," said Sanford A. Miller, PhD, dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. "He has been recognized by many national and international appointments and numerous honors." These honors include the Robert W. Kleemeier Award for outstanding research in the field of gerontology from The Gerontological Society of America and the Nathan Shock Award from the National Institute on Aging.
"The new Methodist Chair holder has made many contributions to our understanding of the effect of genetic modification on the aging process," Dr. Miller said.
Funds for the Methodist Hospital Foundation Chair in Aging Studies and Research total $522,000. This includes a $500,000 grant from the foundation in 1996 and $22,000 from the community. Ben F. Foster Jr., Health Science Center Development Board member, led the fund-raising effort to provide this endowed faculty position to focus on aging research and education
