Neurological Science Grand Rounds:
Neurological Sciences Grand Rounds is held each Friday from 8:00-9:30am. The general format begins with a 30 minute case presentation of an interesting/difficult patient by the Residents, followed by an hour didactic lecture on a neurological topic. We invite all interested persons to attend and to participate. Location for Grand Rounds is in theMedical School, Rm 309L

Merrill Carolin, M.D.
Professor/ Clinical Neurology
Expertise: Dr. Carolin is the Director of Education for the Department of Neurology. She is a leader in the department for educational activites and has been the Residency Program Director for the past 20 years.

Donald Robin, PH.D.
Professor/ Neurology
Expertise: Dr. Robin's expertise is in the area of motor control and motor disorders with a focus on speech motor control. He is the Chief of the Human Performance Division at the Research Imaging Institute and has expanded his research into such areas as chronic pain following TBI and using imaging to predict outcome measures in patients with neurological disease. His work is funded by grants from the NIH.

Charles Akos Szabo, M.D.
Professor/ Clinical Neurology
Expertise: Dr. Szabo's clinical work is focused on caring for people with epilepsy. He has played a leading role in building the Division of Epilepsy and Epilepsy Surgery Program at the Health Science Center. His research strives to characterize a natural model of photosensitive epilepsy in the baboon.

Welcome new faculty
Octavian Lie, M.D., PhD
Assistant Professor
Specialty: Epilepsy
Dr. Lie received his medical degree from the Iuliu Hatieganu University in Romania and his PhD in Genetics at the University of Nebraska. He completed his internship in internal medicine at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland and neurology residency training at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. In June 2011, he will complete his fellowship in Epilespsy at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. He is board-certified in Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Lie's position will provide inpatient and outpatient epilepsy services as part of the So. TX Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. He will also serve as an attending physician on the VA Ward Service. Dr. Lie's role will include education of medical students, residents and fellows.

Russell Pella, PhD
Assistant Professor
Specialty: Neuropsychologist
Dr. Russell Pella holds a PhD in Medical Psychology/Neurology from Louisiana State University with a minor in Behavioral Neurology. He completed his clinical neuropsychology internship at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and recently completed a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology at the So. TX Veteran's Health Care System. Dr. Pella's primary role will be as part of the multidisciplinary staff of the So. TX Comprehensive Epilepsy Center (STCEC). Dr. Pella will also provide neuropsychological testing to patients with dementias, traumatic brain injury, and cognitive disorders seen by neurology faculty. He is also very interested in developing a career in research with a particular interest in research design and statistical analyses.

Rebecca Romero, M.D.
Assistant Professor
Specialty: Multiple Sclerosis
Dr. Romero is a graduate of our own UTHSCSA, School of Medicine. She also completed an internal medicine internship and neurology residency training at UTHSCSA. Following her neurology residency, Dr. Romero served as a clincial instructor in the Department for a period of one year. During this time, she was one of the hardest working and most productive members of the faculty. Dr. Romero recently completed a two-year fellowship in Multiple Sclerosis/Clinical Neuroimmuniology at the University of Chicago. Dr. Romero's activities include the development of a Multiple Sclerosis Clinical Program with clinics at the MARC and attending duties on the combined Neurology Ward/Consult Service at University Hospital. She is also committed to the development of a reserach program in multiple sclerosis/neuroimmunology. Dr. Romero will also be involved with the education of medical student, residents and fellows.
