Residency Program - Message from the Program Director
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio offers a fully accredited four-year training program in Obstetrics and Gynecology that fulfills the requirements of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology for specialty certification. Resident and student education are given the highest priority in our Department. There are 36 full-time faculty members — twenty-three M.D.'s, two M.D./Ph.D.'s, and ten Ph.D.'s. The residency program is fully accredited and approved for six residents at each level.
This program is conducted primarily at University Health System facilities (University Hospital and University Health Center Downtown), with an additional gynecology rotation at an affiliated San Antonio hospital (Metropolitan Methodist Hospital.) Subspecialty rotations in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility and Maternal Fetal Medicine also involve activities at the Medical Arts and Research Center (MARC), St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital and Methodist Ambulatory Surgery Center, all located in the South Texas Medical Center (STMC.) The training is supervised by full-time faculty and part-time faculty of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Our faculty include members certified in the subspecialties of Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Clinical Genetics, and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.
The University Health System teaching facility is tax-supported, with approved residency programs in all specialties. Facilities of the University Health System include University Hospital - a fully-accredited 547-bed hospital and University Health Center Downtown - an outpatient clinic facility located eight miles from the hospital. These facilities serve as the teaching hospital and clinical center of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, which is adjacent to University Hospital. Patients are cared for directly by residents with faculty supervision.
Metropolitan Methodist Hospital is located within ten miles of the University Hospital. Residents participate in the management of private patients and perform gynecological surgery at this institution under the supervision of a Clinical Professor.
Second and third-year residents have the option of spending one month on a selective gynecology rotation associated with our Regional Academic Health Center in Harlingen, TX.
Applicants must be eligible for licensure in the State of Texas. The Department participates in the National Resident Matching Program. Applicants judged to be competitive after review of their credentials are invited for interviews. Interviews are held at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio during November, December, or January.

San Antonio is the nation's eighth largest city. The city boasts ten universities and colleges, the Alamo, the River Walk, Sea World of Texas, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, a symphony orchestra, many outstanding museums and galleries, a zoological park, and historic Spanish missions. San Antonio is located in the heart of Texas, 150 miles from the Gulf Coast and Mexico. The University is located in suburban San Antonio at the base of the Texas Hill Country. Although the South Texas Medical Center is in a major metropolitan area, we are in a safe and serene neighborhood.
Cordially Yours,
Elly Xenakis, M.D.
