Why Social Media?
A strategic value statement
Global instantaneous connectivity has increased electronic communication, but also change the expectation for interaction on the world wide web. We are no longer unidirectionally broadcasting, but have the opportunity to receive and take advantage of feedback comments. Online social and participatory media offer organizations and individuals unprecedented opportunities for communication and collaboration. Now more than ever, we are able to share ideas and information with colleagues across the globe or strangers across the street, with enormous audiences or highly-specific groups, through an large array of media and devices, on-demand or in real time. Social technologies have become an integral part of daily life and work for millions of people. The conversations we need to join, and the connections we need to make, can be found in these new venues.These social technologies offer us new and powerful tools to support our professional work, and to further the University’s mission and goals:
- Online social media offer educators new possibilities for encouraging ongoing, interprofessional student collaboration with colleagues and mentors, engagement in real-world problem-solving, and promotion of lifelong learning strategies and critical literacies.
- These tools enhance clinicians’ ability to share expertise with colleagues and stay current on the latest clinical evidence, and also to more effectively communicate with the growing majority of patients who are seeking and receiving health information online.
- Social media allow researchers to connect with intramural and extramural collaborators, resources, funding agencies, and potential research participants.
- Online communities and social networks are ideal spaces to enhance health awareness, education and practices by leveraging new communications possibilities, ranging from wide-reaching publication to private, targeted support groups.
- Internal and external social tools increase organizational effectiveness by offering improved awareness, communication, professional development and collaboration options, many with little to no licensing cost to the institution.
In addition, when we use social media wisely, we promote the values that are important to our University, such as:
- innovation, as we creatively explore new applications of emerging technologies;
- diversity, as we expand our professional conversation to include more voices;
- trust, as we model responsible and open academic speech, inquiry and scholarship;
- engagement, as we exchange ideas respectfully with our stakeholders and community;
- integrity, as we encourage honesty, respect and genuine expression in our interactions;
- leadership, as we set an example of responsible participation in our communities;
- translation, as we seek to forge important connections from the research bench to the bedside, and onward to the community and the world.
