The UTHSC March of Dimes HealthWalk 2000 and other
projects this spring raised $25,171, an increase of $6,520 over last year’s
results. Pledges for the HealthWalk totaled $19,516.90, the campuswide World’s
Finest Chocolate candy sale raised a total of $3,887.50 and Outback Night
brought in another $1,767.
Anna Uriegas, biochemistry, has chaired the campus
HealthWalk for the past three years. "I became involved with March of Dimes
over 15 years ago. I have no children, but I’m blessed with seven healthy
nieces and nephews. Every baby deserves a healthy start at life," she said.
Some of the research the HealthWalk helps to fund, says
Uriegas, is done by UTHSC Department of Pediatrics researchers.
"Our success would not have been possible without the
work of Dr. Robert Castro, honorary chair, Susie Garza, co-chair, numerous
volunteers, custodial services staff and of course our 450 walkers and their
supervisors," Uriegas said.
