APPLAUSE

Dr. Joel Baseman, chair of the
Department of Microbiology, was elected to the Steering Committee of the
Association of American Medical Colleges’ Graduate Research, Education and
Training Group. The purpose of the group is to provide a national forum for
professional development related to biomedical graduate and postdoctoral
education and training at academic medical centers.

Dr. Gale S. Haradon, associate
professor and chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy, received the
Academic Educator of the Year Award from the Texas Occupational Therapy
Association during the Mountain Central Therapy Conference, held in
September in Corpus Christi. Dr. Haradon also is the newly installed
president of the Texas Society of Allied Health Professionals.

Dr. Nitin Tandon, resident in
neurosurgery and postdoctoral research fellow at the Research Imaging Center
(RIC), was recognized for submitting the best paper in the "Stereotactic
and Functional Neurosurgery" category at the Congress of Neurological
Surgeons’ 50th annual meeting in San Antonio.
His paper, "TMS-PET as a
Measure of Functional Effective Connectivity of the SMA," involves the
use of Positron Emission Tomography to measure cerebral cortex blood flow
changes induced by Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.
Dr. Tandon’s mentor for this
project was Dr. Peter Fox, director of the RIC. Collaborators were Dr. Shalini
Narayana and Frank Zamarripa, a statistician with the RIC.

Dr. Lieve Hoflack, a
postdoctoral fellow in microbiology, received the 2000 Barbara H. Bowman
Postdoctoral Scholarship. The $1,000 award honors the memory of Dr. Barbara
Bowman, longtime professor and chairman of the Department of Cellular and
Structural Biology, who died in 1996.
