Augie Elizondo
Anyone driving through the main gate in the morning or early afternoon looks forward to seeing his friendly face, welcoming smile and helpful manner. He makes the morning a little brighter and parking a lot easier. Augustine "Augie" Elizondo, who is employed as a police guard, was recognized for his professionalism with the Employee Excellence in Service Award. A three-year employee at the Health Science Center, Elizondo welcomes visitors at the main gate near the corner of Floyd Curl and Medical drives. He gives directions, answers parking questions and maintains a smooth flow of traffic at the busiest entrance on campus. Elizondo said he was overwhelmed when he heard about the award. "I’m very honored and very appreciative of winning such a prestigious award," he said. "I also am fortunate to have a job that I truly enjoy. I like working with the general public and U. T. employees. I get to meet new people every day." In nominating Elizondo for the award, Chief Robert K. Bratten of the university police department called Elizondo a tremendous asset to the department and the university. "He is the first person many visitors come in contact with when they arrive on campus. He greets everyone with a positive attitude and a smile. He makes people comfortable with our campus as soon as they arrive and turns the visit into an immediate positive experience. He is an incredible ambassador." Chief Bratten said an average of 300 visitor vehicles come through the main entrance on Elizondo’s shift each day. "Being in charge of the main entry station is not an easy task, but Augustine Elizondo does a superior job of manning this station on the day shift," Bratten said. "He assists those arriving for clinic appointments, those seeking employment and philanthropists with equal respect and sense of urgency. He always has a smile and wave for each arrival." In her job working with members of the broadcast media, Myong Covert, a public affairs specialist in public affairs, relies on Elizondo’s assistance in helping these visitors on campus. "Augie exemplifies service with a tremendously positive attitude," Covert said. |
