ANASTACIO HOYUMPA, MD
Department of Medicine

When Dr. Anastacio Hoyumpa came to the Health Science Center in 1982, his colleagues knew he was a fiercely dedicated clinician and a medical visionary. It came as no surprise when he developed and later directed the Hepatitis Clinic — a progressive system designed to care for patients with the disease.

"I attempt to treat patients not only with respect, but as friends or relatives close to one's heart," Dr. Hoyumpa said. "By doing so, one practices the art of medicine as it should be practiced. The art of medicine is the heart of medicine."

His patients agree, calling Dr. Hoyumpa warm, caring and generous. He is a professor in the division of gastroenterology and human nutrition.

Dr. Lynda Wells has a healing presence. Her colleagues say she is brilliant, funny and filled with compassion. It's that compassion, her patients say, that makes her an exemplary clinician.

"I believe that the relief of suffering — physical, psychological and spiritual — is essential in clinical management in order to optimize therapeutic outcome and enhance the doctor-patient relationship," Dr. Wells said.

Dr. Wells founded, and now directs, the Acute Pain Service at University Hospital. She is also an associate professor in the department of anesthesiology. Dr. Wells began her work at the Health Science Center in August of 1998 and has the reputation of a committed and kind doctor and educator.
