Presidential Teaching Excellence Award Recipients

ROBERT DALE, DDS
Department of General Dentistry

Dr. Robert Dale joined the Health Science Center in 1979 and rapidly became known as an "unfailingly patient and humanistic mentor." Students say he is their greatest advocate and inspiration.

"Any uniqueness in my teaching derives from being a member of a team that contributes to the overall learning of each student and each resident in their dental education," Dr. Dale said.

Dr. Dale directs the pre-doctoral program in the department of general dentistry. His colleagues say his course is "significantly responsible" for the outstanding national reputation the Dental School now enjoys.

KIMATHA OXFORD, MOT, OTR, CHT
Department of Occupational Therapy

When Kimatha Oxford first came to the Health Science Center in 1995, her colleagues said they were inspired by her expertise and professionalism. As an assistant professor in the department of occupational therapy, she quickly became known as a high-energy instructor who prepares students to practice with confidence.

"I know the students' success and competency as therapists begins with what they take away from my courses and our program," Oxford said. "I try to provide as many hands-on experiences for the students as possible."

Oxford's students say she is concise, down-to-earth and a role model of clinical excellence.

MARY HEYE, PhD, RN
Department of Acute Nursing Care

Known as a strong and effective leader, Dr. Mary Heye serves as an assistant professor in the department of acute nursing care. Colleagues say she possesses an extensive depth of knowledge, a professional attitude and a keen sense of humor. Her students say she effectively prepares them to meet the demands of the real workplace.

"Evaluation is what keeps me on my toes as a teacher," Dr. Heye said. "It drives continual improvement in my teaching skills and in the content I present to students."

Dr. Heye joined the Health Science Center in 1980.

KAREN TROENDLE, DDS, MPH
Department of Restorative Dentistry

Described as ethical, fair and dedicated, Dr. Karen Troendle is committed to providing a meaningful and positive educational experience for her students.

"I truly believe that one cannot thrive or learn in a stressful or chaotic environment. One of my goals has been to help students feel comfortable here," Dr. Troendle said. "I am humbled by the nomination for this award. It is something that I treasure."

Dr. Troendle is currently the interim head of the division of operative dentistry. Students and colleagues say she works tirelessly, yet maintains an infectiously positive attitude. Dr. Troendle joined the Health Science Center in 1977.

TERRY LeGRAND, PhD
Department of Respiratory Care

As a student, Dr. Terry LeGrand would stay after class to comfort a patient or watch a new procedure. Now she is an instructor, working well beyond her call of duty. Students say she is accessible, compassionate, gracious and a natural teacher.

"I have a profound belief that I am here to educate the whole person," Dr. LeGrand said. "I see it as my responsibility to help my students grow, not only intellectually, but on a personal level as well."

Dr. LeGrand joined the Health Science Center in 1997 and serves as an assistant professor and director of clinical education in the department of respiratory care.

PATRICIA WATHEN, MD
Department of Medicine

Marked by her vision, enthusiasm and passion, Dr. Patricia Wathen serves as an associate professor in the department of medicine.

"I strive to maintain humility and compassion for patients in every setting and model this for residents and students," Dr. Wathen said. "No other profession offers such intimate knowledge of other people's lives. Physicians should remember what an honor it is to be the recipients of such trust and confidence."

Dr. Wathen began teaching at the Health Science Center in 1993. Colleagues say she is admired and loved by all. Students say she is compassionate and approachable. Residents regard her as an indispensable mentor in the clinic.
