Cesar Garcia grew up in humble circumstances, but says his life was enriched by education, support from family and mentors, and funding from the Kleberg Foundation. Born in Laredo, Texas, Garcia moved to San Antonio with his mother and grandparents when he was 10. He took a special interest in science programs at the inner-city schools he attended. With encouragement from his role models, he went on to earn an undergraduate degree from The University of Notre Dame. Later, Garcia enrolled in the School of Medicine at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio and graduated in 2006. The following year, he was selected as a Kleberg Medical Scholar.
“This has been the opportunity of a lifetime. As a Kleberg Scholar, I’ve been able to conduct much-needed research in the field of health literacy, and have presented at conferences around the country. Thanks to the Kleberg Foundation, my work can impact patients in South Texas and the Lower Rio Grande Valley where it’s desperately needed. This support has also afforded me a head start in pursuing an academic career at the UT Health Science Center where I can inspire future generations. I never dreamed I would be where I am now.”
