Cancer clinical trials are carefully regulated at multiple levels— locally by our institutional committees and nationally by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Participation is voluntary. We will explain each trial, including the procedures, treatment plan, potential risks and benefits. You have the right to choose your treatment after a thorough discussion with your health care providers. You help translate laboratory discoveries into practical applications with your participation.
Patients are enrolled in clinical trials when conventional cancer treatment therapies have not been successful. These studies allow researchers and investigators to learn more about cancer and how to effectively treat it within a voluntary patient pool who are interested in helping advance the science of cancers. About 75 percent of the CTRC clinical trial patients come to our center after exhausting conventional treatment at their local oncologist’s office.
"I would like to say that Dr. Thompson was not only an excellent physician and surgeon, but became a friend and a true source of inspiration to me and I am sure many others. I feel that I am the luckiest guy in the world to have had the opportunity to be under his care. His dedication to this field and to his patients is invaluable. Simply said, he saved my life and I will be forever eternally grateful to this fine man."
