Volunteers are been critical assets for the Cancer Therapy and Research Center as well as the Patient and Family Services Division and have been for many years.
Volunteers not only provide their time, talent and energy. In their own ways, they bring solace, comfort and hope to the patients served by the center.
Whatever job they do, volunteers always make patients their top priority. That certainly is the mission of our newest volunteer program, Patient Ambassadors.
These volunteers‘ sole job is to assist patients, their families and caregivers in any way that enhances their experience at the CTRC. And they do it with empathy and a tenderness that cannot be taught.
They welcome each person who walks through the doors of the CTRC. Each person is treated as an individual with specific needs. Sometimes a hug works best to make someone feel at ease as they face a treatment.
In the course of their day, Patient Ambassadors provide information, guide patients to the various clinics at the CTRC and they direct visitors to their destinations.
They roam the hallways to help patients who may be lost or direct people to the restrooms, food court or lounge areas. They share information about free classes and support groups offered by Patient and Family Services.
While patients wait in the lobby or lounge, Patient Ambassadors lend a sympathetic ear or provide an encouraging word. They strive to give patients and visitors personal attention.
During their day, Patient Ambassadors visit the main lounges, including in the radiation and chemotherapy areas, and offer drinks, snacks, fruit, hats and blankets to patients.
There is never a charge to patients and most seem genuinely gratified to be offered something as simple as a bottle of water.
The Patient Ambassador program was just launched this year and already the patient feedback has been encouraging. If you would like to become a part of this pioneer effort, click on the link below.
Patient Ambassadors are an extension of the caring service that permeates our entire organizations from the doctors to the maintenance staff.
Patient Ambassadors may be our newest volunteers but they are already making a difference.
