Thyroid cancer represents only about 7 to 10 percent of all cancers. Diseases of the thyroid gland – including thyroid nodules — are more common. The lifetime risk of developing thyroid cancer in women in the United States is less than 1 percent.
The three main types of thyroid cancer are
- Papillary or follicular carcinoma
- Medullary carcinoma
- Anaplastic carcinoma
Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma is the most aggressive variety of thyroid carcinoma. The average age of people diagnosed with this type of cancer is 70, so it typically strikes later in life. This cancer often quickly invades the tissues surrounding the thyroid gland in the neck and spreads to other organs.
Why choose the Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC) for thyroid cancer?
The CTRC’s multidisciplinary thyroid team includes:
- Endocrinologists, who specialize in thyroid cancer and other endocrine cancers
- Surgeons, who specialize in thyroid and endocrine cancer-related surgery
- Radiation oncologists
- Medical oncologists
- Pathologists who specialize in endocrine tumor pathology
- Palliative care teams
After a comprehensive evaluation, the multidisciplinary cancer team will discuss your case at one of our regularly conducted endocrine cancer conferences.
Clinical trials at the CTRC
As a cancer center designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the CTRC offers care delivered by endocrine cancer teams that specialize in all phases of clinical trials.
We have clinical trials for our thyroid cancer patients who have just been diagnosed. There are also clinical trials for our patients who have had prior treatments. We also offer experimental treatments and first-in-human clinical trials under special programs for patients who qualify.
Our endocrine cancer team partners with the National Cancer Institute and other organizations for clinical trial-based treatment options.
