Corrective jaw surgery is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon when skeletal imbalances that cause a bad bite need to be corrected, such as an open bite, protruding jaw or receding jaw. The procedure(s) can improve chewing, speaking and breathing and may help with chronic temporomandibular joint (TMD or TMJ) pain. Corrective jaw surgery is usually combined with orthodontic treatment that prepares the teeth for surgical repositioning. The entire process can take two years or more.
A consultation and examination with your oral and maxillofacial surgeon is needed to decide which treatment plan is best for you.
