Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) is when a surgeon places a band around the top portion of the stomach, leaving a small pouch for food.
Why might I need laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding surgery?
Lap-Band surgery is recommended for people who have tried other weight-loss methods without long-term success. Your physician may suggest this surgery if your BMI is between 35 and 40 and you have certain health conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease or Type 2 diabetes.
What are the risks associated with laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding?
Some possible risks include slippage of the band or puncturing the stomach.
Depending on your health there may be other risks associated with this procedure. Be sure to talk to your physician about any concerns prior to surgery.
What happens after laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding?
After surgery, you will be able to go home the same day or the next day. Your diet will be liquid and pureed for two to three weeks after surgery. After that time, you will be able to add soft food. After four weeks, you can return to regular, smaller portions. You will need to chew slowly and completely before swallowing.
Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding does not make you lose weight quickly. You will need to adopt a lifelong nutritious, healthy diet and exercise routine. Your doctor will recommend daily vitamins and minerals to make up for any nutrients your body doesn’t absorb from food.
