Colonoscopy: Screening and Diagnostic

Mature man with nurse

UT Health San Antonio's gastroenterology practice specializes in expert diagnosis and treatments for a wide range of conditions, from abdominal pain, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatic disease to heartburn.

A colonoscopy examines the lining of your colon (large intestine) using a colonoscope, a flexible tube with a lens that is lighted so that your specialist can identify and remove tissue. This procedure requires the colonoscope to be inserted through the anus so that it can reach the rectum and colon. Air is then pumped into the colon to expand it and provide your doctor with a clear view. It is during this procedure that abnormal growths can be found and removed. In preparation for this test, the entire colon must be thoroughly cleansed.
