We provide early, expert care for high-risk pregnancies, including advanced 4-D ultrasound, genetic testing, surgery and more.

Our maternal-fetal medicine specialists (MFMs) provide complete care for high-risk pregnancies starting as early as 5 weeks and through delivery.

Maternal-fetal medicine specialists are Ob/Gyns who have received extensive, additional medical education for providing specialized evaluation to diagnose and care for pregnancies that have a higher potential for complications.

There are many conditions that could make a pregnancy high-risk, including:

  • Asthma during pregnancy
  • Obesity during pregnancy
  • Diabetes during pregnancy
  • Heart conditions during pregnancy
  • Geriatric pregnancy (pregnancy at or after age 35)
  • Twins or multiple babies
  • Previous miscarriage or stillbirth
  • and many more.

Patients with high-risk pregnancies rely on UT Health San Antonio’s MFM experts for genetic testing, prenatal diagnosis and treatment, advanced 4-D ultrasounds, surgery and specialized evaluation for pregnancy risks such as birth defects and genetic disorders.

Each of our high-risk patients is given direct access to a specially trained nurse called a perinatal coordinator. Perinatal coordinators are dedicated to ensuring both mom and baby receive the care they need throughout pregnancy and answering any questions the family may have.
