Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

Doctor with patient

Our knowledgeable physicians perform gastric laparoscopic bypass surgery for patients who have tried other weight-loss methods without success.

Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is done minimally invasive through small incisions. The surgeon attaches a small pouch directly to the small intestine to reduce the amount of food you can intake. During the procedure, the surgeon attaches this small pouch directly to the small intestine. This procedure is not meant to be reversible.

Why might I need gastric bypass surgery?

Your physician might recommend gastric bypass surgery if your BMI is over 35, are between the ages of 35 and 40, have tried weight-loss methods without success and have certain health conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease or Type 2 diabetes.

What are the risks of gastric bypass weight-loss surgery?

Some possible risks of surgery are bleeding and infection. You may also experience Dumping Syndrome. This can cause nausea, accelerated heartbeat, fainting, abdominal cramping, and in some cases diarrhea after eating. Be sure to consult your physician of other risks prior to your surgery.

What happens after laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass weight-loss surgery?

After surgery, you may stay in the hospital for one to two days. You will be on a liquid diet for the first few weeks and will slowly progress to a soft food diet. Once you are on a soft food diet you will need to chew slowly and completely. You cannot drink water 30 minutes before or after you eat. Your physician will supplement your diet with vitamins and minerals that may be lost due to your new restricted diet.

Your doctor will prescribe vitamins and mineral supplement to replace those that your body will not be able to absorb.
