What is AHEAPA-S?
AHEAPA-S, A Health Education Attainable
from Physician Assistant Students, is a UTHSCSA
Physician Assistant Studies educational community medicine project
designed to increase health education in rural and/or underserved Texas
communities. The AHEAPA-S
team is composed of four senior physician assistant students from the
University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. AHEAPA-S is
a Community Medicine Outreach Program that is dedicated to serve the public by
providing health information on important issues geared to impact the lives
of all people in Texas.
This mission is achieved by publishing
health related articles in
Texas newspapers
with an emphasis on rural and/or medically underserved areas.
All articles submitted to newspapers for publication are written by UTHSCSA
physician assistant students and edited by distinguished UTHSCSA PA faculty.
During its inaugural year (2003), AHEAPA-S reached a total of 102,000 people throughout Texas counties via health education articles published in 21 Texas newspapers. An additional 3,000 individuals have been reached through community activities. In 2004, the team has reached over 300,000 people covering 58 Texas newspapers in 53 counties. In 2005-2006, AHEAPA-S has a total of 101 participating newspapers reaching a potential total of 930,000 people. AHEAPA-S hopes to continue to increase the number of individuals reached by raising the number of newspapers and writing additional health related articles to be distributed. The community project will expand by distributing medical brochures to physician offices and rural clinics, attend health fairs and medical conferences. This year, some of the brochures will be translated into Spanish. AHEAPA-S believes the value of education is immeasurable, assisting with prevention and increasing understanding.
