Clinical Affiliates
Clinical affiliates are a very important part of health
professional education. After the student has been prepared
at the University in each area of the clinical laboratory,
they are eligible to begin their practicums at clinical
affiliates. Practicums are experiences in an actual clinical
laboratory under the
supervision of a practicing laboratory professional. In
this environment, the students work with actual patient
specimens learning to process and analyze specimens and
report results. Testing is usually performed in large
volume so learning how to organize and perform multiple
tasks within time limits is a skill that must be learned
in this setting. Practicums vary in length. Students are
usually assigned to more than one affiliate so that they
will experience working in different environments. Affiliates
include county and federal hospitals, private specialized
reference laboratories, private, non-profit hospitals
and clinics. Most CLS students will need to complete a
practicum in at least one affiliate outside the San Antonio
area. Housing may be provided in some areas of South Texas.

Practicum Assignment Policy.
The Cytogenetic Program maintains affiliations with
many major clinical cytogenetics laboratories throughout
Texas. The student should be prepared to relocate to facilities
in these cities during the 24-week full-time clinical
practicum portion of the curriculum
