The School of Allied Health Sciences at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio invites nominations and applications for the department Chair.  The Chair is the academic officer directly responsible for the operation of the department, including budget, personnel, curriculum, accreditation, and planning matters.  The Chair is responsible for the overall quality and standards of the academic programs and department.  The Chair oversees development of new initiatives, selection of faculty, staff, and students.

 

The school seeks a Chair who will enthusiastically build on the existing strengths of the department’s education and research programs and lead the department in the areas of:  innovative approaches to educational programming; interdisciplinary education and research; focus on health disparities and underserved populations; commitment to providing high-quality education programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels for diverse, underrepresented students; and scholarly activity.  The Chair will foster a positive department culture characterized by collegiality, collaboration, and mutual support among faculty and staff; mentor faculty at various levels toward professional development, promotion, and tenure; and support the professional development of staff members.  He/she is expected to be a visionary and forward-thinking leader with regard to the clinical laboratory disciplines, education, and research, and should be an active participant in local, state, and national professional organizations.   As a professional leader, the Chair will nurture mutually beneficial partnerships with clinical agencies to enhance educational opportunities for students and clinicians and promote the clinical laboratory professions within the health care community.

Essential Functions

  • Actively support and promote the missions of university and School of Allied Health Sciences
  • Lead in planning, setting strategic priorities, and implementing new initiatives (such as a clinical doctorate in clinical laboratory sciences)
  • Lead faculty in research and scholarly activity
  • Manage personnel, budgets, and resources for maximum benefit to the department and school
  • Recruit, supervise, evaluate, and mentor faculty and staff
  • Provide vision and leadership for undergraduate and graduate education programs
  • Seek and procure external funding from a variety of sources in cooperation with the Development Officer to advance the department
  • Lead faculty and staff in team building and collegiality

Requirements

  • Earned advanced doctoral degree, Ph.D. preferred, with qualifications appropriate for the academic rank of associate professor or professor with tenure
  • At least five years of teaching experience in the clinical laboratory sciences a university or four-year college
  • Administrative leadership experience in an academic or clinical setting
  • Evidence of scholarship as demonstrated by funded research, professional publications in peer-reviewed journals, etc.
  • Excellent communication skills with a variety of constituents, e.g., students, faculty, staff, and professional community

Reports/Relationships
The department Chair reports directly to the Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences.  All faculty and staff members in the department report to the Chair.

The Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences
The Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences is one of the leading departments in the United States and is known for innovation and progressive leadership.  Faculty members are characterized by collegiality within the department and collaboration within the university, and several are national leaders and scholars.  The department offers Master of Science degree programs in toxicology and immunohematology tracks and NAACLS-accredited undergraduate programs in clinical laboratory science and cytogenetics.  Programs enroll about 60 students and have six full time faculty, in addition to the chair, and four FTE staff members.  Undergraduate programs include baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate certificate programs with several tracks.  Plans are underway to initiate a clinical doctorate program in the near future.

The School of Allied Health Sciences
The School of Allied Health Sciences comprises eight departments and two programs:  Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Deaf Education and Hearing Science, Dental Hygiene, Dental Laboratory Sciences, Dietetics and Nutrition, Emergency Health Sciences, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant Studies, and Respiratory Care.  Several of the school’s departments, including Clinical Laboratory Sciences, are ranked or recognized nationally.  The faculty has approximately 65 full time and 10 part-time faculty members and 40 staff members.  Enrollment is approximately 575 students in undergraduate, professional, and graduate degree programs.  The school makes concerted efforts to recruit and retain a diverse student body with approximately 50-55% minority students, including 35-40% of Hispanic origin.  The school has programs in Respiratory Care and Physician Assistant Studies at the Laredo Campus Extension, approximately 2 ½ hours south of San Antonio on the Texas-Mexico border, and a cooperative program in Dietetics and Nutrition with Texas A&M International University (Laredo) will be launched in 2009.

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) is the leading research institution in South Texas and one of the major health sciences universities in the world.  With an operating budget of $576 million, the Health Science Center is the chief catalyst for the $15.3 billion biosciences and health care sector in San Antonio’s economy. The Health Science Center has had an estimated $35 billion impact on the region since inception and has expanded to six campuses in San Antonio, Laredo, Harlingen, and Edinburg.  More than 22,000 graduates (physicians, dentists, nurses, scientists and allied health professionals) serve in their fields, including many in Texas.  Health Science Center faculty are international leaders in cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, aging, stroke prevention, kidney disease, orthopedics, research imaging, transplant surgery, psychiatry and clinical neurosciences, pain management, genetics, nursing, allied health, dentistry, and many other fields.    The university has five schools - School of Allied Health Sciences, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Medical School, School of Nursing, and Dental School – with approximately 2800 students. UTHSCSA is a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), which is defined as an accredited and degree-granting public or private nonprofit institution of higher education with at least 25% total undergraduate Hispanic full time equivalent student enrollment.

San Antonio
San Antonio has a warm, sunny climate that provides opportunities for year-round outdoor activities.  The area’s hills and rivers are favorite spots for hiking and water sports.  The cultural atmosphere is apparent in the city’s museums, symphony, theaters, and public gardens.  Two of the city’s most famous attractions are the River Walk and the Alamo, and the world champion Spurs provide exciting entertainment for sports enthusiasts.  Theme parks include Fiesta Texas and Seaworld.  San Antonio, the major metropolitan center in South Texas, offers the advantages of a large city with the pace and conveniences of a small town.

Assistant Professor

The Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio invites applications for a full time tenure track faculty position. Primary responsibilities include teaching clinical microbiology and molecular diagnostics and developing advanced molecular diagnostics courses. The candidate will be expected to participate in funded research and professional and University service activities.

Qualifications include a doctorate degree, teaching and clinical experience, and a history of funded research. Certification as CLS (NCA) or MT (ASCP) is preferred. Salary and rank are commensurate with education and experience.
