Financial Information

General
Overall cost of the UTHSCSA PA program varies by individual. While tuition, fees and texts are required of all students, students have some selection in the cost of insurance. UTHSCSA does not provide on-campus housing, though there is affordable housing within a short distance of the campus. Students are also required to have a reliable means of transportation. All costs are estimates and subject to change.

Educational Costs
Educational costs vary greatly by year. Curriculum varies by semester and thus tuition varies. Year one costs include the purchase of a laptop computer (estimated $2500), the cost of high-speed internet access (estimated $600/year) and equipment leasing fees for financial aid purposes. Year two includes the cost of a PDA (estimated $500) and equipment leasing fees. Year three costs include the rental of a pager (estimated at $300) and additional practicum fees.

Tuition
MPAS1 is 35 hours of curriculum credit spread over three semesters; Fall, Spring and Summer. Coursework is largely basic sciences with an introduction to the profession and clinical practice on the Health Science Center Campus.

MPAS2 is 36 hours of curriculum credit spread over two semesters; Fall and Spring. Coursework is largely pre-clinical on the Health Science Center Campus and at local medical facilities.

MPAS3 is 48 hours of practicum spread over three semesters; Summer, Fall and Spring. Students travel to practicum sites throughout South Texas. Students may incur additional travel and lodging expenses when on a remote site. All students are required to do two rural or remote rotations. Students also attend a 2-credit-hour Senior Seminar in the Fall semester.

Fees
MPAS fees include those for: Educational Technology, Clinical Practicum, Equipment Leasing. Student Services and Student Assistance, Student Health Services, Library, ID, Graduation Fees and Parking. Parking minimum is $48 per year and may increase based on the selected or available parking lot.

Insurance
All MPAS students are assessed fees for malpractice liability insurance. All UTHSCSA students are required to carry personal health insurance for the duration of their studies. Students who do not have health insurance are assessed an annual fee for a University-approved health insurance program.

Texts and Equipment
Texts and equipment leasing fees are included, as well as the estimated cost of a computer in the MPAS1 year and a PDA in the MPAS2 year. An additional amount is budgeted for high-speed internet access. Texts and course manuals vary by semester and coursework. Additional equipment includes the cost of laboratory coats and professional laboratory jackets. Rental of a pager is included in the MPAS3 costs.

Living Expenses
Students can expect additional living expenses to include the costs of housing, transportation, and food. There is ample affordable housing in the Medical Center area. To cut costs, some students choose to have roommates or live with family while attending PA School. Transportation expenses increase during the MPAS3 year as students must travel daily to off-campus facilities. Personal insurance (vehicle, domicile, life insurance) will add additional expenses. The average total student loan/expenses at UTHSCSA is estimated at $35,000-$40,000.
