About PAVE:

We are four students from the physician assistant program at University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio.  We have implemented a community medicine project with our local youth to spread awareness about domestic violence and provide resources regarding where to seek help.  We were fortunate enough to have been awarded a community based project grant by the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA).  This grant supplied all of our funding needed to implement our project.

As PA students and as citizens of San Antonio, Texas we have recognized the rates of domestic violence reported in the past few years to the San Antonio Police Department have increased dramatically.  In our research we found that there is a window of opportunity in which you can make the greatest impact on education of domestic violence by targeting and educating adolescents.  We also found that by targeting after-school programs in community centers gives access to a variety of adolescents with very different backgrounds.

For these reasons, we choose to work with the Guadalupe Community Center during the month of January 2006. We choose a variety of activities to help, not only make it more interesting, but to reinforce our topics. We divided the children into two groups according to ages. The first group consisted of ages 12-17 years old. The second group consisted of ages 5-11 years old.

The main goal of PAVE is to bring awareness to the community regarding domestic violence through educating the youth. We also want to enable the youth with the tools and knowledge that will allow them to respond
appropriately in situation where they encounter domestic violence. Finally,
we want to empower the youth to go out in their own communities and schools
and spread awareness of domestic violence so that they too can become
advocates against domestic violence.

In order to measure how well we
accomplished our goal we will give a pre-quiz before the implementation of the
program and a post-quiz at then end of the program in order to see how much
knowledge the children gained through out the two weeks.

For a course of two weeks we implemented our program which followed the following course.

MURAL DAY/DV AWARENESS DAY!!

(link on homepage) Mural day “Let’s PAVE the way to a brighter future.”

Our finale day, January 21st, we planned a family mural day to bring domestic violence awareness to not only the children of the Guadalupe Center but to the community. We asked the children to invite their family and friends to come and help us paint our mural, enjoy food, entertainment, meet BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse) and have your picture taken on a motorcycle, face painting and lots of fun.

Our mural was a collage of submitted drawings from our children depicting their version of the PAVE project and was incorporated into a sketch draw by our own Kendel Bunce.
